Houston-born and -raised Jawwaad Taylor, a member of Shape of Broad Minds, is the emcee and trumpet player in The Young Mothers, where he fuses creative free improvisation that’s inspired by trumpeters such as Joe McPhee with forward-thinking hip-hop. Before moving back to Houston, where he frequently collaborates with Nameless Sound director David Dove, Taylor spent a handful of years living and creating in New York City; some of his higher profile gigs included performances and collaborations with hip-hop luminaries Jay-Z and MF DOOM. His current solo projects include The Bully Love Set and Black Fetish (with drummer virtuoso Jamire Williams).
