JAIME OSPINA’S CONTEMPORARY ANCESTRAL COLOMBIAN ORCHESTRA

Jaime Ospina’s band : Aboubakar Sylla, Beto Martínez (Grupo Fantasma) and Raymond Johnson.

Jaime Ospina has been an Austin resident for the last year and a half after coming from his native Colombia where he used to work as a musician, teacher, and researcher. He started as a rock bass player performing in the club circuit of Bogota until he went to La Habana, Cuba to acquire formal music education.Between 1999 and 2003, Ospina traveled extensively along the Caribbean coast meeting with the masters of the traditional Afro-native Colombian music. In his Orchestra’s sound, native and afro-Colombian elements get together with West African drumming and Texan psychedelia to create this always new and impermanent sound landscape based on in situ looping and improvisation.
